Break-ups can take their toll in many ways, but it's not like everything was all bad with an ex (usually). The good parts of that past relationship can keep us nostalgic and reminiscent. Thinking about the good times with our ex—and the things that worked or made us happy—lead us to wanting more... perhaps even a re-do, just with someone different. And this is where things get tricky. We start comparing any current partner (or potential partner) to the good parts of the past relationship... expectations that can never be met, as they are different people. These missed—and often unspoken—expectations lead to dissatisfaction. We convince ourselves that our ex was better, and we dismiss new or potential partners before we even give them a chance.
